Spring 2018 CAPA Global Education Workshop in London

Saturday 14th April

5:55 pm Meet CAPA staff in the lobby of the hotel to travel together to Bentley Restaurant, which is across the street (27-33 Harrington Gardens, Kensington, London SW7 4JX)

Sunday 15th April

9:45 am Meet CAPA staff in the hotel lobby
10:00 am Panoramic tour of London the Global City.

  • Become acquainted with London’s most well-loved landmarks during this exciting panoramic guided tour. You will sweep past a host of top attractions, both old and new, so have your camera ready for this as we drive past many of London’s most iconic sights; Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, The River Thames, and the City of London.
12:00 pm Tour to end for lunch at The Dickens Inn (St Katharine’s Way, St Katharine’s & Wapping; London E1W 1UH)
2:00 pm Riverboat from Tower Millennium Pier to Greenwich

  • After a gentle boat trip down the Thames, we will explore some of the enchanting sites of Royal Maritime Greenwich with CAPA’s own Dr. Anthony Gristwood and Dr. Joy Frith. This includes the historic Royal Naval College, the National Maritime Museum, the historic marketplace, and one of the most important scientific sites in the world, the Royal Observatory-home of the Prime Meridian Line.
 Free Evening: CAPA will provide you with options for evening activities

 

Monday 16th April

9:00 am Meet in Hotel Reception for 10-minute walk to the CAPA London Center
9:15 am Tour of the CAPA London Center

 9:30 am Welcome and Objectives for the workshop
10:00 am CAPA Philosophy and Program Models
 11:00 am Coffee and tea break
 11:15 am London as a “Global City”, presented by Dr. Mike Woolf (Deputy President for Strategic Development)
 11:45 am Tour of Kensington

  • Accompanied by a knowledgeable Blue Badge guide, you will gain exclusive in-depth insight about your Kensington neighborhood’s local culture. You will see how CAPA introduces the Kensington area to new students. We will end at Olives Restaurant.
1:00 pm Lunch at Olives Restaurant & Bar (140 Gloucester Rd, London SW7 4QH)

2:30 pm Globally Networked Learning, presented by Dr. Kristen Dean
3:15 pm Global Business Institute, by CAPA Faculty Denise Blunn
4:00 pm Student Advising, presented by Claire Kibblewhite (London Center Director) & Sheriden Kuech (Manager of Program and Student Services)

  • You will learn about student advising, emergency protocols and crisis management, quality assurance (evaluations) pastoral care, housing and provision for customized programs
5:00 pm Free evening. CAPA will provide you with options for evening activities.

 

Tuesday 17th April

[Location: The Street – 3rd Floor of the CAPA Center]
8:30 am Internships in London, presented by Craig Kench (Vice President of Global Internships), Katie Lander (Internships Placement Manager), and Jon Travers (CAPA internship faculty)

  • You will receive an overview of processes for internships, including our academic course.
10:00 am Head off-site with the internships team to visit sites where students are working.

1:00 pm Student Panel over a sandwich lunch
2:00 pm    Afternoon Activity:

  • One-on-one meetings with staff
  • Backstage Tour of the National Theatre
  • Backstage tour of the Globe Theatre

You will have pre-registered for one of these activities prior to arriving at the workshop.

4:00pm Free time
7:30 pm Optional Musical Theater Performance Les Misérables (Queens Theatre, 51 Shaftesbury Ave, London W1D 6BA)

 

Wednesday 18th April

[Location: Kensington Room – 1st Floor of the CAPA Center– unless otherwise stated]
9:30 am Meet at the CAPA Center. We will depart with CAPA staff by cab to see local student housing.
11:00 am Academic Management and Oversight, Faculty Development, Record of Achievement, and CAPA’s Experiential Learning Philosophy, presented by Dr. Ruchama Johnston Bloom and Dr. Anthony Gristwood.
12:00 pm Faculty Showcase, facilitated by Dr. Anthony Gristwood
1:00 pm Lunch with faculty and CAPA staff
2:00 pm Wrap Up and Brainstorming Session
Optional afternoon activities to include:

  • Tour of the Victoria and Albert and Natural History Museums (close at 6pm)
  • Shopping trip to Harrods Department Store
  • One-on-one meetings with staff
 7:00 pm Farewell meal
